harmony of self

“It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.” Joseph Campbell

The colors of this temple are extraordinary in the warm light of the setting sun. However, it was on one of our first pilgrimages in 2004 when we arrived after dark that the real mystery of this temple came to light.

Uncommonly, the temple was dedicated to 2 gods; the crocodile god Sobek, (god of the Nile) also known for creating chaos in people’s lives when he suddenly appeared out of the mud, and the falcon god Horus, (god of the sky and protector of the king.)  Essentially, theses gods were enemies but worshiped equally at this temple.

Campbell believes, “myths and rites were means to put the mind with the body,” bringing them into harmony.

It is no wonder that this temple has many panels of the first representations of medical and surgical instruments, as well as being a place for healing and birthing.  When both our primal instincts for survival (crocodile) combine with a higher all-seeing wisdom (falcon) and are revered equally, then a deeper healing takes place.

Wishing you harmony of self.
